Bahrain cancels Online Seminar in Violation of Freedom of Expression
STOCKHOLM- Skyline International foundation condemns the Bahraini authorities' arbitrary interference to cancel an online seminar in violation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression guaranteed under international law.
Skyline strongly denounces Bahrain's "official authorities" for forcing the "Bahrain Society for Resisting Normalization with Zionist Enemy" to cancel a seminar only minutes after its beginning on Saturday evening, May 9, 2020.
Accordingly, Skyline states that organizers of the seminar had to apologize to the viewers and stop public broadcasts. The seminar gathered researchers and academics from Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
Skyline also condemns the decision of Bahraini authorities to silence seminar organizers, forcing them to cancel it using intimidation and threats. It is just another example of the repression imposed on associations opposing their policies, even in foreign issues of semi-popular consensus.
Moreover, Skyline emphasizes that such behavior reflects the usual repressive practices in Bahrain that contradict international human rights conventions, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in which Article 19 states that "everyone has the right to hold opinions without interference."
The same article declares that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression.” Adding that, “Everyone has the right to hold opinions without interference…" Including the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas, regardless of borders, in writing or print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.”
Skyline calls on the Bahraini authorities to stop their strict rules against the gatherings and to lift the restrictions on peaceful activities related to human rights groups, and to allow them to operate freely and express their views without restrictions.
