Skyline International strongly condemns the Palestinian Authority's (PA) decision to close the Al Jazeera office in Ramallah—an alarming move that mirrors the Israeli occupation’s oppressive tactics against press freedom and media coverage.

On January 1, 2025, Al Jazeera reported that the PA had suspended its broadcasts and frozen the operations of its office and employees in Palestine, citing alleged violations of local laws. This action, which silences one of the region’s most prominent news channels, appears designed to suppress coverage of the escalating events in the occupied territories, particularly in Jenin’s refugee camp.

This decision is a flagrant violation of press freedom and freedom of expression, rights enshrined in international laws and treaties to which Palestine is bound. Skyline warns that such actions pave the way for further restrictions on media operations and create an environment of fear and intimidation for journalists.

The timing of this closure could not be more troubling. It coincides with the ongoing war on Gaza, where journalists face relentless targeting and violence. This follows the Israeli authorities' closure of Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah in September 2024, under a military order. During the raid, Israeli forces confiscated equipment, documents, and imposed severe restrictions on employees, including barring them from using their vehicles.

In a broader context, the closure mirrors Israel’s legislative attack on media freedom, such as the so-called “Al Jazeera Law,” which empowers authorities to shut down foreign broadcasters, including Al Jazeera, confiscate equipment, remove content under the guise of "security threats," and block its websites in Israel.

These actions expose a coordinated assault on press freedoms, aimed at silencing independent reporting and curbing the ability of journalists to freely cover events and hold power to account. The ongoing crackdown on media outlets like Al Jazeera signals an alarming trend of state-sanctioned censorship and the erosion of press freedom in Palestine.

Skyline stresses that during times of crisis, the press must be empowered, not silenced. News agencies like Al-Jazeera play a critical role in exposing human rights violations and providing vital information to the world. Efforts to suppress the truth through censorship are not only unjust but also a direct affront to the principles of transparency and accountability.

We call on the Palestinian Authority to immediately reverse the decision to close Al Jazeera's office and allow its teams to operate freely in the West Bank without interference or intimidation. The Palestinian Authority must uphold press freedoms in compliance with Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which unequivocally protects the right to freedom of expression, including the right to "seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds."

Moreover, the PA must review and repeal any laws that enable the harassment or prosecution of journalists, bringing its policies into alignment with international standards.

Skyline International stands in solidarity with Al Jazeera and all journalists facing intimidation and censorship.
