Skyline International condemns the torture of two Iraqi civilians in Anbar province in Iraq. Hussam Farhan Al-Namirawi and Mohammed Al-Janabi were torutred to death by Iraqi government forces for their comments on social media.

“What happened is a flagrant and deliberate violation of human rights,” says Moaaz Hamed, Skyline’s Secretary-General. These abuses contradict with a number of international and regional conventions that enshrine the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including article 19 (1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion without interference.”

Skyline calls on international and Arab human rights organizations and Amnesty International to take their responsibility seriously, and press the Iraqi government, particularly the Ministry of the Interior in Iraq, to stop such violations against activists, academics and laweyers.
