Sky Line International expressed its deep concern regarding the ongoing  detention of two Libyan journalists, Mohammed al-Qarj and photographer Mohammed Al-Shaibani for more than 20 days.

Skyline called on the forces of retired Libyan Major General Khalifa Haftar to release the journalists at “Ahrar Libya” local channel, who have been incommunicado since May 2nd.

According to the information, Qaraj and Shibani are being held in the city of Tarhouna by the Ninth Brigade, known as Kaniat, while they were covering clashes south of Tripoli.

The Human Rights organisation, Skyline international, stressed that international humanitarian law provides that civilian journalists performing their duties in armed conflicts must be respected and protected from any form deliberate attack.

According to Article 79 of Protocol I Added to the Geneva Conventions of 1949: “[Journalists] shall be protected as such under the Conventions and this Protocol, provided that they take no action adversely affecting their status as civilians”.

Skyline holds the detainers of these journalists responsible for any harm done to them. It also demands their immediate release and to ensure their safe return to their families as soon as possible.
