Stockholm: Skyline International strongly condemns the disturbing online attacks on Sabrina Siddiqui, a White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. Siddiqui was targeted after posing a critical question to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference, addressing the alleged discrimination against Muslims in India.

Following her inquiry, pro-Hindu social media users unleashed a barrage of abusive and hateful comments towards Siddiqui, tarnishing her professional reputation and attempting to undermine her credibility. Such reprehensible attacks are an affront to the principles of free speech and journalistic integrity, and Skyline International stands firmly against these acts of intimidation and harassment.

Amit Malviya, the head of the Bhartiya Janata Party's information department, went so far as to label Siddiqui's question as "motivated." This unsubstantiated accusation undermines the crucial role of journalists in holding public officials accountable and threatens the fundamental principles of democracy.

Accounts known for promoting pro-Bharatiya Janata Party and pro-Hindutva narratives maliciously attacked Siddiqui's religious identity, labelling her an "Islamist" and suggesting that she acted at the behest of Pakistan. These baseless insinuations are not only defamatory but also fuel prejudice and bigotry, serving to further polarize societies.

OpIndia, a prominent pro-BJP website, published a scathing article targeting Siddiqui, disparaging her as "the daughter of Pakistani parents" and accusing her of "echoing the claims of Islamists." Such personal attacks not only undermine the values of ethical journalism but also perpetuate a toxic environment that endangers journalists worldwide.

Skyline International firmly believes in the right of journalists to ask probing questions and hold leaders accountable for their actions. The online attacks on Siddiqui exemplify the dangers faced by journalists who dare to question those in power, and these actions must be unequivocally condemned.

It is crucial that governments and societies foster an environment that upholds freedom of the press, protects journalists from online harassment, and ensures their safety in carrying out their duties. Skyline International calls upon the Indian authorities to thoroughly investigate the online attacks against Siddiqui and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.

As an independent news organization, Skyline International reaffirms its commitment to supporting journalists in their pursuit of truth and providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard. We stand in solidarity with Sabrina Siddiqui and all journalists who face intimidation and attacks for simply doing their job.
